Preparing FrameMaker documents for conversion to DITA
The creation of truly useful DITA to support single-source publishing applications is not always as straightforward a process as it may at first appear. There are a number of issues which need to be addressed along the way to ensure the successful conversion of content from a low granularity medium, such as publications created in Adobe® FrameMaker®, to a high granularity XML architecture such as that supported by DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture).
Low granularity content, such as unstructured FrameMaker, stores content as long book-oriented files, with each file containing a part, chapter or section. DITA, however, uses a high level of granularity by saving content as modular topics, typically in separate files. A section will consist of multiple topics, typically resulting in a high number of topics per publication. DITA also allows topic reuse, whereby a topic can be used in many publications. This allows the author to change the content in one place and have that change reflected in all publications that refer to the topic that has been changed, delivering single-source publishing applications.

"Two challenges everyone faces with DITA are adoption and getting legacy content 'out of the hole' in terms of making it pay. We're making headway with both of these at Webtrends. I knew there were companies out there doing conversion to DITA and I was so glad to have discovered Stilo. The output we received was just beautiful--to get 800 pages back so quickly and in such a polished state was fantastic, better than I ever thought possible."

WEBTRENDS
"Stilo worked collaboratively with our technical documentation team in the United States and used its online Migrate tool to convert our documents for us. These documents were rich in terms of content, incorporating tables, images and equations. Stilo's support has enabled us to begin our migration to a new authoring and production environment on schedule, helping us to resolve any technical issues that arose during the transition, We enjoyed working with the Stilo team and look forward to working with them again in the future."

"The Migrate service was an important factor in our choice of Stilo to support our FrameMaker to DITA conversion project. Unlike conventional conversion services, Migrate gives authors hands-on control over how and when they convert their content. Documents can be converted in a matter of minutes, thus avoiding the traditional content freeze during the conversion process - a definite plus for STMicroelectronics which has a large quantity of content to convert."
